At Qarat al Milh, ARA Petroleum E&P, HELIOVIS AG, and Trevi Systems announced mechanical completion and commissioning of a joint pilot in August 2024: a solar-thermal field, heat storage, and Trevi's forward-osmosis process.

The pilot

Scope of the Field Test

ARA Petroleum E&P, HELIOVIS AG, and Trevi Systems combined a HELIOVIS solar-thermal field, thermal storage, and a containerized Trevi forward-osmosis train at Qarat al Milh.

The pilot concentrates hypersaline produced water using stored solar heat.

Three Systems in One Thermal Loop

HELIOVIS solar collectors feed thermal storage, which carries the process beyond daylight hours while FO separates water from a hypersaline produced-water stream.

  1. 01

    Solar field

The HELIOVIS collector field operates at approximately 180°C.

  2. 02

    Thermal storage

Storage is designed to support continuous operation beyond solar hours.

  3. 03

    Forward osmosis

The design target is 50% further brine concentration (ARA announcement).

From Solar Heat to Reduced Brine

Each subsystem serves a defined duty.

  1. 01

    Collect heat

HELIOVIS tubes heat the solar loop to approximately 180°C.

  2. 02

    Store heat

Thermal storage is designed to support operation beyond solar hours.

  3. 03

    Transfer water

Trevi FO moves water into the draw solution while retained salts remain in the feed-side concentrate.

  4. 04

    Recover and route

The design takes a produced-water feed of approximately 1,000 bbl/day, targeting up to 140 m³/day of freshwater and 50% further concentration of the hypersaline stream.
